27th May 2008
Sunday 18th May.
26 players, Number 1 Sportsground, playing between the under 12 and under 14
grades, sun shining and a slight breeze, you couldn’t hope for any better day.
We had 7 new members sign up
on the day. Whether there are some blokes trying to get a bit of run under
their belt in preparation for the City Old Boys/Hunter Masters game or not is a
question in itself.
We kicked off right on 11am
as advertised but with a few blokes still in the sheds getting changed. John
Sheehan (who is notoriously late) and John Tutty were two that I noticed. Brian
Phillips turned up late as well. His excuse was he couldn’t find us. Nice try
Brian.
The greens had a couple of
new players in the younger age bracket and it showed all day. With the man
mountain Fred Messemaker in the ruck, the run out of the middle was nothing
short of phenomenal.
Try as they might the blues
could not take advantage of any breaks they got. Disposal left a lot to be
desired. This seems to be a trend among quite a few players at the moment.
There were a lot of good
passages of play to be seen for those that were watching. From Tank leading and
taking a mark, then kicking the goal from an angle, to Clarkey running almost
the entire length of the field before taking a mark in the right forward
pocket, also kicking a goal.
The awards went to Tank for Golden
goose and Worst goal of the day, Clarkey for Play of the day, Hopey for the Mark
of the day and Bill Bradshaw for Drop kick. Congratulations everybody.
Congratulations go to John
Sheehan who played his 25th game for the club on Sunday as well.
The
next game is in Wagga Wagga. This is on 31st May.
Please
make an effort and get to it. I know it is a long way to go for a game of footy
but it is worth it.
Our
next local game is on the Central Coast on 15th June. This designed
to give the new Central Coast Phoenix AFL Masters Club a kick along. We need as
many as possible to get along to showcase this.
Our social membership has grown immensely this
year with most of the wives and girlfriends of players taking the opportunity
to join.
With this in mind Anne
Vennell has suggested a girl’s night out or just a lunch together. This so the
girls can get to know each other a little better.
If you are interested in
doing something then please get in touch with Anne at anmv@bigpond.com
or Denise at petalpow@bigpond.com
via email. Or you could just see them at the game.
Birthday calls this month
